Road roller, is a kind of road repair equipment, widely used in high-grade highways, railways, airport runways, dams, stadiums and other large-scale engineering projects of the fill compaction operation. So what are the requirements for the selection of road rollers for different working conditions? This article will be from the project quality requirements, the thickness of the pavement, the type of highway and the material to be pressed four aspects to answer.

 

 

1. Select According To The Requirement Of Project Quality.

 

a. If you want to get uniform compaction density, you can use pneumatic tyre road roller, such as XCMG XP263 pneumatic tyre road roller. Pneumatic tyre road roller does not destroy the original viscosity of the soil when rolling, and there is a good combination between the layers of soil, plus the front wheel can be oscillated, so the compaction is more uniform. Therefore, the compaction is more uniform and there is no false compaction.

 

 

b. If you want to make the road surface compacted and smooth, you can use full hydraulic road roller. for the compacting ability of the roller is not high requirements of the region, you can use the pressure is lower and mobile flexible roller. If the compaction effect is to be achieved as soon as possible, large tonnage rollers, such as SEM 526 26 tons road roller, it can be used to shorten the construction period.

 

 

2. Selection According To Paving Thickness

 

a. When rolling asphalt concrete pavement, the weight, amplitude and vibration frequency of the road roller should be selected according to the paving thickness of the mixture. Usually, on the thin paving layer with thickness less than 60mm, it is better to use 2-6t small vibratory roller with amplitude of 0.35-0.60mm, such as: XCMG XMR403S 4 tons double drum vibratory compactor, which can avoid phenomena such as piling up, rippling and damaging aggregates.

 

 

b. At the same time, in order to prevent the asphalt mixture from being too cold, it should be rolled immediately after paving. For thick pavements of more than 100mm thickness, a large or medium-sized vibratory roller with high amplitude (up to 1.0mm) and 6-10t should be used, e.g. XCMG XD83 8 tons double drum road roller.

 

 

3. Selection According To The Type Of Highway

 

a. For automobile-only roads, large vibratory rollers with high compaction capacity should be used; for roads that do not often require compaction operations, it is best to equip about 3t of mobile and flexible vibratory rollers.

 

b. For cement concrete road surface, single drum roller can be used.

 

c. For asphalt concrete road surface, full-driven vibratory roller should be used, such as: XCMG XS143 14 tons full hydraulic road roller.

 

 

d. For the subgrade of advanced pavement roadbed, tyre rollers are preferred for compaction in order to obtain uniform compactness.

 

4. Choose According To The Type Of Material To Be Compacted

 

a. For rock fill compaction, large tonnage rollers should be used to displace large blocks;.

 

b. For compaction of clay, it is better to use bump compactor; e.g. XCMG 16 tons vibratory compactor with sheep foot.

 

 

c. For compaction of mixtures, vibratory rollers are preferred to achieve uniform mixing of large and small particles.

 

d. For deep compaction, heavy vibratory rollers at slow speeds are preferred, while static-action rollers should be used for shallow layers.
